The tiny villages of Lech and Zürs (about a half mile apart) were originally settled in the 1200’s by dairymen from around Zermatt. Neither has grown much in the ensuing 800 years; in fact, Zürs has only 65 inhabitants in summer! Today Lech, with its rushing river, full of old world charm, was voted Europe’s prettiest village in 2004. Getting there, in a blink, Zürs passes you by. Their buildings, ancient and new, are painted in the colorful Tyrolean style. Elegant restaurants and clubs mix with discos, and cozy stüblis, while a small number of elite shops appeal to their sophisticated guests. Have lunch on the mountain or at one of the town’s popular ice bars. Then one evening go by horse drawn sleigh through star-lit pines for a romantic dinner in Zug.
The locals first tried their barrel stays on Lech's slopes in 1895. Skiing in Lech and Zürs has changed a lot since then! Today more than 88 lifts of the latest high speed technologies connect to their sister resorts of Stuben, St Christoph, and St Anton for miles and miles of skiing terrain! For off-piste enthusiasts, you are right in the midst of Austria's largest powder arena and for boarders those areas are expanded. Or test your prowess against the clock above the Kriegerhorn lift. Those just getting their 'snow legs' can start on Oberlech's gentle slopes graduating to some of the greatest variety of intermediate skiing anywhere. For further mountain magic one 'new' mountain hutte restaurant dates from 1750 when drovers sought it as refuge for their pack animals.
