After the post bus twists, turns and climbs around more than 16 serpentine switchbacks you'll finally arrive in Verbier. Planned in châlet-style architecture more than 55 years ago, it is Switzerland's only purpose-built resort. Over the subsequent years it's become a very active and popular ski area attracting young skiers from all over, especially England. It's compactly developed so those who flock here find it easy to get around to the lifts, ski shops, cafés, the sports center, bars, late night clubs, or wherever by foot or by the free buses.

Sitting at the bottom of a bowl dominated by Mont-Fort and Monte-Gélé and in the midst of 'Les 4 Vallées,' Verbier truly has an incredible amount of skiing! There are 245 miles of trails serviced by 95 lifts including the new 'Chondola' a gondola-chair combo between La Chaux and Les Ruinettes, the 30 person high speed gondola above Medran and the 150 passenger Mont-Fort cable car. Expert skiers, of which there're many, take their chances on Monte-Gélé or Lac des Vaux. Those finishing Tortin's 3,000 foot vertical of bumps have a new eight passenger detachable gondola to whisk them back to Verbier.  Intermediates are very happy at Ruinettes or Savoleyres; the latter has a new eight passenger chair to La Tzoumaz. Débutants begin just above the village. The more adventurous can ski two days in Chamonix or Courmayeur or one day do the 'Super St. Bernard' to Italy. The most experienced In April might plan to attempt the four day ' Haute Route' to Zermatt or Chamonix.

HOTELS

HOTEL CENTRAL

The Hotel Central is tiny, with seven, or is it eight, rooms right there

in the middle of Verbier, on the town’s Place Centrale – how aptly it’s

named.  The hotel has a wooden chalet style exterior and a very modern

contemporary interior. This design hotel may be small in actual room

numbers but each is very special: all the baths are truly en suite, right within

each room and all have Jacuzzis. Additionally you have plasma TV, cosy

bathrobes, free wifi, and the ever-hoped-for eiderdown. The stylish décor

is simply done in earth tones with a little purple thrown in for fun. The Central has ski storage with boot heaters, is non-smoking, the size-appropriate small bar, and only offers breakfast. But no problem there ~ Verbier’s plethora of restaurants fitting any budget are just a short walk away.

CHALET D'ADRIEN
When the Châlet d'Adrien opened in 2001 Verbier's hotel dynamics increased several notches. The luxurious 29 room jewel brought a new and higher dimension to the resort’s accommodations. Brigitte de Turckheim and husband Eric Cachart, owners of France’s Château de Curzay, offer their Loire Valley staff a winter change-of-scenery. That includes Chef Marco Bassi whose Michelin star was awarded in 2009, overseeing the gourmet restaurant and another serving very local specialties. Complimenting the hotel's ski-in panoramas, each spacious, pine-paneled room is designed with all our creature comforts. To further calm body and mind, guests can imbibe in the hydrotherapy spa, hamman, sauna, whirlpool, and the infinity pool. An idyllic week ends with a final night at the Grand Hotel du Lac in Vevey.
