The final bit up to Wengen and Grindelwald is by cog rail. It may be slow, but you'll soon realize it allows fabulous photo ops. That's because they both sit amidst the most spectacular scenery in Switzerland. Tiny Wengen on its sunny plateau is guarded by the many-thousand foot peaks Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau while it overlooks the cascading waterfalls of the precipitous Lauterbrunnen Valley. The nature loving English discovered these centuries-old farming hamlets in the early 1900's and have been coming back ever since. They've always known a good thing when they've seen it!
Speaking of our English cousins, you don't have to be a member of their Downhill Only Club to enjoy the more than 100 miles of trails linking Wengen, Grindelwald and Mürren. The efficient rail and upgraded lift systems interconnect each village with the three main ski areas: Kleine Scheidegg, Männlichen and the Schilthorn–all part of the Jungfrau's impressive line-up. The Männlichen cable car, linking skiers to Grindelwald, starts right in Wengen's center. And for those willing to test their mettle against the best, try the two and a half mile, 3,500 foot vertical Lauberhorn run. It's known as the longest, most difficult downhill race – because of steepness the last 200 yards open only for the race!
