Over 2,200 years ago Roman legions marched over the saddle of the Matterhorn home to Italy. Today skiers follow that route in ways unknown to the Romans and faster than they ever dreamed. But in the village of Zermatt you still get around like the Romans – á piède. In this historically rustic resort the fastest moving vehicle is a horse drawn sleigh taxi! That doesn't mean the comforts of modern life never made it up to Zermatt – quite the contrary. There are wonderful hotels, shops, restaurants, spas, bars, and cafés with people watching to enjoy while taking in the very cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Do your exercises before coming to Zermatt for its world famous skiing tests everyone's mettle. In recent years major construction and ongoing redevelopment have evolved into a highly integrated, efficient, and up-to-the minute lift system. With Italy's Cervinia, 74 lifts from underground trains to a 150 person cable car and high speeds whisk you to 240 miles of trails and extensive off-piste powder. The three interconnected areas are Sunnegga, Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn – all accessible with the free ski bus.The 125 passenger cable car connects Sunnegga and Gornergrat and in 06-07 a new cable car complex opened between Riffelberg and Furi. In the spring the most fearless can try the Tiefbach or on a day at April's end, do the 35 mile ski marathon with a 31,000 foot vertical. For families, children nine and under ski free. Your six day pass now allows a day's skiing in Saas Fee. For those of us enjoying life at a slightly slower pace, relief from hunger and fatigue is never too far away: Zermatt has 38 mountain restaurants giving you an inkling of how much European skiers enjoy a mountain lunch!

MIRABEAU HOTEL & ALPINE RESIDENCES
