Over 2,000 years ago Roman legions marched the saddle of the Matterhorn home to Italy. Today skiers follow that route in ways unknown to the Romans and faster than they ever dreamed. But in the village of Zermatt you still get around like the Romans – a piede. In this historically rustic resort the fastest moving vehicle is a horse drawn sleigh taxi! That doesn't mean the comforts of modern life never made it up to Zermatt – quite the contrary. There're wonderful hotels, shops, restaurants, and cafés to enjoy while taking in the very cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Before coming to Zermatt do your exercises – its world famous skiing can test anyone's mettle. In recent years major construction and ongoing redevelopment of the lifts have evolved into a highly integrated, efficient and up-to-the minute system. With Italy's Cervinia, 74 lifts from underground trains to a 150 person cable car and high speeds with varying numbers of skiers take you to 240 miles of trails and extensive off-piste powder. The three interconnected areas are Sunnegga, Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn – all accessible with the free ski bus, the 125 passenger cable car connects Sunnegga and Gornergrat and in 06-07 a new cable car complex opened between Riffelberg and Furi. Come spring the most fearless can try the Tiefbach or at the end of April in a day, do the 35 mile ski marathon with a 31,000 foot vertical. For families, children nine and under ski free. Your six day pass now allows a day's skiing in Saas Fee. Those of us enjoying life at a slightly slower pace, relief from hunger and fatigue is never too far away: Zermatt has 38 mountain restaurants giving you an inkling of how much European skiers enjoy lunch!

ROMANTIK HOTEL JULEN S
Daniela and Paul Julen's original family hotel is always a step ahead of guests' needs in their 32 room classic. The Tyrolian-style hallways lead to rooms paneled in century-old, Bavarian carved pine with classic details. In contrast, the curtains, upholstered chairs and pillows are bright, richly colorful Thai silk. The hotel's conspicuously fine cuisine is the perfect complement to the tri-level pool, spa and fitness facility. There you can heal weary mind and body while watching clouds circle the Matterhorn through the I M Pei-style skylight. The zen-like spa offers cerebral herbal and aroma therapy, a tepidarium, steam bath, natural body treatments, and facilities for couples and families. Above are 17 luxurious junior suites complementing the original 44 bedrooms; all well-appointed with cozy terry robes for the pool and spa. Yes, the Julens, of that hotel-running clan, have a personal touch: a warm welcome, comfy chairs around the fireplace, Josef's Wine Bar (the best in town), fresh flowers to brighten the day, and a kitchen serving Gault-Millau 15 point cuisine – all reasons the Mirabeau is continually selected one of Switzerland's 50 best!
