WENGEN
HOTEL SCHÖNEGG

Tiny, car-free Wengen, my second European ski resort, is where the elevated, 20 room, Schönegg has kept a watchful eye over main street since 1903. In 1928 it was the town’s first hotel to have running water and things have kept on improving.  Today it’s owned by the Dequeker family. Their lounge welcomes guests with a blazing fireplace surrounded by sofas, wood paneling and views of the mighty mountain medley: Jungfrau, Eiger and Mönch. The cozy bar and restaurant hark back to earlier times and, if wanted, dinner can be arranged in the wine cellar. The hotel mixes historic and contemporary design with upgraded furnishings. Bedrooms are warmly decorated with creature comforts, and for those who want, there are sauna and massage facilities. Manager Kurt Ropers helps make it one of Switzerland’s 100 best hotels. Maybe the cow gracing the bar door is what did it!
